Sculpture reading" workshop in the Basilica of Vézelay

Reading sculptures

The language of stones...

Romanesque capitals have a lot to tell us. Before books, people made stones speak. This workshop invites participants to take the time to observe them carefully, to "listen" to them, to discover their details, to guess their story, to go back to the source of mythical and biblical writings and to decipher their symbolic meaning.

If their messages seem to ring in your ears like a foreign language and their stories seem a little enigmatic, our guide will be on hand to help you decipher them.

In moments of silence and sharing, this workshop will leave you with lasting memories, the astonishment of having been touched in the heart by a voice from the depths of time.

Course of the workshop "Reading sculptures in the Basilica of Vézelay

To begin with

With the guide

Receive
Accompanied by the guide, participants are invited to gather around the same marquee to "listen" to the image and name its forms, down to the smallest detail.

Read
In the light of biblical and patristic tradition, and in some cases with reference to other ancient sources, the guide situates the image in the theological, philosophical and mythological context of the 12th century.e century.

Interpret
Imbued by this first glimpse into the depths of the medieval artist's work and enlightened by the reading of Tradition, each person in silence takes the time to welcome the sculpture as a word addressed to them personally.

Secondly

in small groups

Send
The group is formed into duos or trios. Each small group is then given the task of discovering a new big top, which it will explore using the same approach as above. The observations and interpretations of each group will then be shared with all the participants.

It's important that each person's own perception and interpretation is taken on board without preconceived ideas, allowing for a rich cross-fertilisation of views.

In the end, this time when we make the stone speak is a way of making it heard in the present, of bringing out the life in it, in short, of bringing it up to date... when the XIIe When the 12th century speaks to the 21st !e century!

Worth noting

Before taking part in this workshop, it is advisable to have already discovered the interior of the basilica. Participation in " A two-stage tour of the basilica "is an excellent preamble to the workshop.
